If there is no access to Everclear, the what is best liquor to make a tincture with?? 100 proof, or 151 proof?
It says use something clear, but does it have to be? There is clear vodka that is 100 proof, clear whiskey as well.
But then there’s bacardi that is 151 proof, but it’s not clear.
So what’s best to use in making a tincture, without access to everclear?
Let’s stick with ABV because everyone knows what that means.
100 proof is only 50% ABV, 150 proof is 75% ABC, Everclear is the strongest alcohol you can get through distillation at a little over 95% ABV (that’s called the azeotropic limit).
You need to be over about 75% ABV in order to be able to dissolve volatile oils out of herbs and spices. You could get a small still and start with cheap vodka at 35%ABV (that’s very cheap) and then produce your own spirit at 90% ABV.
ETA
“if it’s whiskey or flavored rum, etc, and then run it through an activated charcoal water filter to purify it before using.”
You would never be able to clarify aged, pot distilled spirits by this method, firstly you need to cut the spirit down to 30%-35% for the activated carbon to work. Vodka is cheaper than any matured spirit. You could remove most of the heavier chemicals in flavoured/matured spirits through distillation followed by activated carbon. But then you’d still have to shove it though a still again because you need to cut the spirit down to 30% for the activated carbon to work,
