Is it possible for “hackers”& bad guys 2come on here, email me & then get connected & mess my puter up etc ?
I am like so many others, scared of hackers or whatever they are called now. I do keep updated security as far as I know. What do you consider the most/best updated all over security.? I’ve lost 2 hard drives to viruses to the tune of mucho money. ANcient puter user

thank you for all of your marvelous answers, when you are older and don’t understand modern technology, it may happen, you will be like me and almost cry when people like you are so kind and helpful. I didn’t know I could reformat my ruined hard drive and of course they were more than happy to sell me a new one for a huge price. Younger people especially need to understand that technology is changing so fast and for us over 50, a lot of us don’t have the basics from childhood. So thanks !!!! The sugar and the ants really gave me a good mind picture.
You are being just a little bit paranoid about hackers and “bad guys,” but maybe you have a reason for that. The first thing you need to do is change your profile and NOT allow anyone to email you. That’s how trouble starts.
There is no excuse for losing hard drives to viruses. The two best antivirus programs are Avast Home and AVG 7.5, and they are free. With either one of them installed, you will not have a virus get to your hard drive to destroy it.
The next step is to protect your computer from spyware, and again, the two best are free: SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. If you immunize the computer in SpyBot, then run a full bot check once a week, you won’t have spyware. If you keep Ad-Aware updated and run a Smart Scan daily, you won’t have any other spyware or malware. Then you and your computer are protected against the things hackers and bad guys do to computers. If you are truly ancient, you’ll remember the song “The Best Things in Life are Free!”
