“Bombing” atheists again: If you think religion is unnecessary…?
…then you say that some of the rules and laws of modern societies like the US or my home nation Finland are unnecessary. A modern society like Finland is based on Christianity.
The rules and laws of the US are based on the writings of Enlightenment-era political philosophers, the Magna Carta, and the structure of ancient Athenian democracy. They are not based on Christianity or any other religion, and should not be. I don’t know much about Finland, but even if you told me that the Ten Commandments provided a direct basis for the Finnish legal system, I’d say that religion still isn’t vital to the functioning of the country. Here’s a hint: religion did not create law or morality. Many religions have co-opted these things, and claimed a divine source for the legal and moral mandates that already existed in previous societies. We don’t need a God to tell us that murder and theft are detrimental to the smooth functioning of a healthy society; we already knew that. Do you really believe that if Christianity had never been introduced to Finland, you’d be a country full of amoral, ravening wolverines? I don’t.
